Mexico supreme court decriminalizes abortion across country
Mexico’s supreme court has unanimously ruled that state laws prohibiting abortion are unconstitutional and violate women’s rights, in the latest in a series of victories for reproductive rights activists across Latin America.
Wednesday’s ruling came two years after the court ordered the northern state of Coahuila to remove sanctions for abortion from its criminal code, a decision which prompted a tortuous state-by-state process of legal battles. So far 12 of Mexico’s 31 states have decriminalized the procedure.
The court’s decision marked a major victory for the GIRE, a reproductive rights organization based in Mexico City, which brought the test case against the Mexican state as part of a years-long campaign for reform.
Mexican women took to social media on Wednesday to celebrate, posting green heart emojis, in a reference to Latin America’s burgeoning feminist movement.
“It feels like a dream. Like I’m the happiest person alive right now. If you don’t have the ability to give birth, you can’t tell me whether you think it’s right or wrong,” said Andrea Hernández, a feminist activist in Mexico City. Read more here
Christian Jezebel Minister Claims Killing Babies in Abortions is “Holy” and “Life-Affirming”
Another “Christian” pastor is once again claiming that killing babies in abortions is Biblical.
Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis took to Twitter the other day claiming that “ abortion access is holy and life-honoring.” Lewis, the senior minister at Middle Collegiate Church, claimed that killing babies is a good thing to stopped “forced births.”
“Forcing people to give birth reveals such little respect for life and the wellbeing of everyone involved,” Lewis wrote. And she claims giving birth to unwanted children “harms many children who are born.”
“It harms folks who are forced to have a child against their wishes. Not to mention the folks who desperately need abortion care for medical crises,” she wrote. Read the rest here
Mother Posts At-Home Chemical Abortion on TikTok
A mother filmed herself undergoing the chemical abortion process and posted it to TikTok, Newsweek reported Saturday.
Monica, 25, told the outlet that when she posted the video on July 20, she hoped it would help “ abortion become[s] more normalized and seen as what it is — healthcare.” In the video, the Los Angeles, California, native shared how she prepared and went through with the abortion of her nine-week-old unborn baby. Left-Wing United Church of Christ Resolution Claims Abortion Is ‘Healthcare’
The United Church of Christ (UCC), a left-wing denomination of Christianity that often goes against Biblical teachings, announced this week that it passed a resolution titled “Denouncing the Dobbs Decision and Proclaiming Abortion is Healthcare.”
The resolution, which affirms the supposed “right of all people to access reproductive healthcare including contraception and abortion” passed with a vote of 611 in favor, 24 against, and 13 abstaining. The resolution claims that “forced birth is an act of sexual violence and the choice to have and care for children is a sacred decision which should not be forced upon anyone.” Read the rest here
Mexico’s highest court declares abortion bans ‘an act of violence’ against ‘pregnant persons’
Mexico’s highest court has declared abortion bans unconstitutional and ordered the legislature to change federal abortion laws to comply with its ruling.
In a statement Wednesday, the Supreme Court of Justice, Mexico’s equivalent of the U.S. Supreme Court, announced that “the legal system that regulates the crime of abortion in the federal criminal code is unconstitutional because it is contrary to the right to decide of women and people with the capacity to bear.”
Wednesday’s decision comes after “a civil association challenged the legal system of the Federal Criminal Code that criminalizes abortion and the medical personnel who practice it.” Read more here
